„The focus on applied research was an obvious choice for someone like me, who wanted to address a real-world business problem.“

In conversation with SIBE DBA candidate Michael Scheit

Michael Scheit began his DBA journey in 2021 while holding the position of Chief Information Officer (CIO) at Mediengruppe C.H. Beck. In August 2024, he successfully defended his doctoral research titled “How will IT Megatrends and Legal Tech technologies influence the future IT strategies of law firms in Germany?”. His dedication to advancing both his academic and professional careers simultaneously highlights the unique opportunities provided by SIBE’s DBA program.

Master’s program: Information Management
Doctoral program: Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)
DBA completion year: 2024

Why did you choose the SIBE DBA program?

The reputation of SIBE and its DBA program, as well as the flexibility for working professionals, played a major role in my decision. The focus on applied research was an obvious choice for someone like me who wanted to address a real-world business problem.

What was your dissertation topic and why?

My dissertation topic was: “How will IT Megatrends and Legal Tech technologies influence the future IT strategies of law firms in Germany?”
With the growing number of (legal) technologies, law firms may struggle with which ones to implement, making the choice difficult without an assessment of the impact factors of the Legal Tech in general and the impact factor on a firm’s business models in particular.

How did you benefit from the SIBE DBA program?

The program was certainly very instrumental in forging connections within the framework of the dissertation. I’m very grateful for the support of my mentor and have also expanded my personal networks as a direct result of the Delphi study. Other business professionals in the field have reached out to me and have also shown great interest in the results of my study.

What do you remember most fondly during your DBA?

While the research journey was a combination of tedious progress and moments of breakthrough, the feeling of accomplishment after the successful viva will definitely remain a cherished memory.

Is ere anything you would like to pass on to future doctoral students?

Every journey has its ups and downs. Grit and a re-examinations of one’s thinking processes were the ingredients for success in my case.
